We’ve already tested many devices from the Chinese maker Audio-gd here at Qobuz, notably the NFB-2, NFB-15, and the DAC-19, which were all so good that they got a Qobuzism from us. Out of these devices, the DAC-19 is the only one to use an R2R (PCM1794K) analog digital converter chip, which is only used on a very small number of devices worldwide.

The subject of our test today, the DAC Master 7, is essentially a « super DAC-19 » with 3 oversized power supplies and discreet components to guide them: one for the digital map and two more for the digital conversion and filtering.

These maps almost exclusively use discreet components as well (one single circuit that’s integrated into each map), and each is equipped with four R2R PCM1704K chips that we’ll look into later, seeing as 8 chips might seem a little surprising. But this high number isn’t needless, it’s a response to a specific demand and wasn’t just chosen to look good, even if it really does.

Presentation

The DAC Master 7 doesn’t mess around. It’s a sturdy piece of kit made entirely out of stainless steel, 43 x 43 x 8cm and weighing in at 15kg. No fuss in terms of presentation either : it’s functional, with a power switch and two buttons on the right hand side of the cover. The screen is split into 7 segments that light up with a blue light to indicate selection, and only covers 13mm of the surface.

Connectivity

On the back of the DAC Audio-gd Master 7 are no less than 6 digital inputs, which are all different. Let’s start with the ancestors of the coaxial and optical S/PDIF, the first of which is a high-quality BNC Bayonet from Neutrik. A 3-pronged XLR plug, also made by Neutrik, allows the user to listen to professional standard AES/EBU digital signals.

There’s also, of course, an asynchronous USB input on a female type B connector and something much rarer: a 12S input on a RJ45 connector, which takes the digital information to be used by the converter chips.

The analogue audio signals are available in asymmetrical Cinch inputs (standard links), symmetrical mode on XLR inputs, or on Mini Three-Contact XLR inputs in the form of an electrical current thanks to ACSS (Audio-GD Current Signal System) technology, which was developed by the creator and serves to provide superior sound quality via its discreet components. Together they make up an amplifier without counter-reaction, to ensure the best sound quality possible.

Construction

If the DAC Audio-gd Master 7 is impressive on the outside, it’s even more so on the inside, and you’re definitely not investing in an empty box! We’ve preferred to opt for photos from an angle this time, as they came out better than images from above.

Just looking at the three R-Core power transformers (which are, according to some, the best in the biz) you get an idea of the quality at work here. As you can see, they feed into the electrical circuits attached to them. The various necessary tensions on each circuit board are made up of small components and transistors mounted on a radiator, as can be see below.

You’ll also be able to note the large amount of filtering condensers, especially on the two analogue converters where the ACSS circuits are located. The two condensers on them are electrochemical models: Nover Audio Grade at 3300 μF/63V. There are also 1500 μF/35V models by the same make.

The USB entry, made by the Italian brand Amanero and customised by Audio-gd, is mounted along the side of one of the inner linings and covered by isolating foam.

The digital filter uses an Altera Cyclone II, an FPGA (field-programmable gate arrays), used by Audio-gd as a digital signal processor on double samples but also quadruple and octuples. It also generates dithering in order to randomly split the quantification noise. It’s a very stable, temperature controlled oscillator (or TCXO, the little metal box on the right) that provides the clock.

Next to the FPGA you can see a little bar that lets you operate the « hardware » mode, as you can see in the table below.

You’ll also see three S/PDIF Wolfson WM8805 (24 bits to 192kHZ) receivers. Each of these is for one S/PDIF entry only (coaxial, optical, and AES/EBU, the last of which is charged by a transformer). In turn, the S/PDIF signals on the BNC are managed by a Burr-Brown DIR9001 receiver (DIR : Digital Audio Interface Receiver), but only at 24 bits to 96 kHz.

On each channel of the DAC Master 7, Audio-gd uses four Burr-Brown PCM1704K analogue digital convertors. The PCM1704K is compatible with 24 bits to 192 kHz digital audio signals, having only one channel and the ability to invert the phasing of the signals. The conversion is R2R and only uses the digital signal bits to reconstruct the analogue signals acting on a network made up exclusively of resistances that have a given value (R*) and their double (2R) without passing via any sampling.

Despite the fact that the maker doesn’t mention this point, we noticed, based on the symmetrical positioning of the components and the serigraphy that indicates XLR+, CAST+, and the other XLR-, CAST-, that the PCM1704K on each channel is used in groups of two. One of the two PCM1704K groups delivers a phase signal (or positive signal, see top half of the photo) and the other delivers an oppositional phase signal (or negative signal, see bottom half of the photo), all in order to get symmetrical signals right out of the converter chips.

Elsewhere, the output signals from each group of two chips are added together in order to reduce the total residual noise, which is inferior to each one of the chips (the total noise being divided by the square root of the number of chips, namely √2, which corresponds to a reduction of 3 dB).

The signals exiting the PCM1704K take the form of a current and are then converted on each phase and filtered by a circuit using ACSS (Audio-gd Current Signal System) technology. No condensers have been used on the signal’s journey in order to perfectly preserve its purity, whereas transistor buffers have been place in front of the Cinch and symmetrical XLRs, in order to make room for the exiting signals.

Sound quality

Oh my goodness. That sound. Even through our little Sony UDA-1 and Triangle Antal Anniversary speakers, with the DAC Audio-gd Master 7 receiving its signals via USB from our PC running Foobar2000 in KS mode… It sounds incredible. We also put a rider on Bypass, like on the “jumpers setting” photo you can see on the Audio-gd website, in order to get around the digital filter and listen to the audio signals at source.

As such, not one note was missing on extracts from Vespri per l'Assunzione di Maria Vergine by Vivaldi, with Rinaldo Alessandrini conducting the Concerto Italiano. Each one was brimming with colour, energy, dynamic, and life. The instruments soared as high as the voices and the whole thing made us want to turn the volume up and up and up! You’d think you were in the pit itself, and the only thing you’ll feel like doing is cranking up the volume and enjoying it.

When listening to the palpitating Dance of the Acrobats by Snegurochka by Tchaikovsky, we were taken aback by the musical maelstrom that presented itself to us wherein the smallest, most delicate touches of the orchestra were just as magnificent as the grandest crescendo. You get just as many chills listening to the smallest taps on the triangle as you do when the cymbals crash bang into life. It’s alive, realistic, and once again, the more you turn up the volume, the more you enjoy it!

We streamed the song Isn’t It A Pity from the album All Things Must Pass by George Harrison and were stunned, yet again, by this little beast.

Very simply, we’d never heard such a presence from a record before. You’d almost think he’d come back from the dead to sing just for you, or that you were a fly on the wall, listening to the song as it was recorded in the studio itself! The intense spirituality of the song – until now only slightly revealed to the listener - can finally be understood and appreciated through the Master 7.

On Intro from the album Des ombres et des lumières (Deluxe), the general ambiance and cries of the seagulls are captivatingly real, and you find among the various tracks of the album, that the natural quality and class of the DAC Audio-gd Master 7 shines through time after time.

Once again, Audio-gd has soared to the top of the Qobuzism podium with their DAC Master 7, a masterfully made device that delivers some of the best sound we’ve ever had the pleasure of testing. It’s a must have device from our point of view, and we’d go as far as to say that – despite usually not discussing this – even its price is exceptional.
